This poem is supposed to be a diamond, if set in the middle of a page of text. It's difficult to see here, but that's how it is
ORIGIN OF SYMMETRY
You can no longer scare me.
Your name is no longer shrouded in hate.
Your face is no longer an odious, banished being.
Your black eyes do not pierce me through, make me weak.
I hear my heels click in the dark corridor and I pass that beloved cubicle.
My head turns in bashful remembrance, a blush blossoming on my wide cheeks.
I hated our first date, the way our hands stretched over the silence and nothing was certain.
I see your strange, loping gait, the way your feet pointed outward, dragging slightly, but only slightly.
I see the mirrors reflect the past, and your form materializes in the glass, unbanishable and transcending time.
I read the comments you left for me, and I see the picture of me on your screen, intertwined with a heart and our date.
The doors that are always locked were open that night, that night I made you mine, and you imbued me with life, and with light.
I can trace your presence from the front door where we walked, hand in hand, to the stairwell with your name carved on that doorframe.
You scared me then, keeping me awake at night with frustrated desires, and the old fears crept in, and nestled up to me, leaving me no quarter.
I know your scent, that heavy, deep musk mingled with slight smoke and a hint of peppermint. I smell it now, and my eyes close in remembered pleasure.
I love that road where you left me, then came back, swept me up, held me close, planted a kiss on my lips, said you'd miss me, left me reeling, left me wanting.
You were my first everything, and my last nothing. You were never supposed to be serious but my mind and heart were separate then and I let myself wish and wonder.
I remember everything. My mind is not a sieve. Everything stands sharp and bright, as if they were pictures in a brand-new storybook with a crackling spine and thick, straight leaves.
I remember the way my arms fitted themselves around your neck when they told us to kiss, and a picture snapped that the world could see, and I smiled mischievously.
You spoke of me fondly, happily, proudly, to your friends and all assembled. You spoke of me fondly, happily, proudly to everyone and I leaked a light so bright.
Those fountains are heavy with you, and every time I pass them I stand in the middle of the two, and I press my face to your invisible chest, like I did then.
I wanted you, and my heart raced with inhibitions, with anticipation, with fulfillment, and with the most desperate dream I so ardently wished for.
We sat twined together on that chair over there, and you fell asleep on my shoulder in the booth by the window, humming a slow song.
I hated our last day together, the way you walked away sturdily, taking from me the shoulder I leaned on, leaving me a-swaying.
I stand precariously on the step I was stepping on when I stepped off it into your outstretched arms, and you held me.
I pass by the deli where we went after the party I hated, and I remember that only night we were truly together.
I saw you again, and I was taller. Your name had lost its bitterness, tasting sweet on my dry tongue.
I smiled at you, and you at me. We stood at a crossroads, infinitely apart, but yet together.
You loved that strange, sweet song, and the lyrics poured from the mouth I loved.
I loved the nickname you had for me, and how your teeth found my neck.
You hated odd numbers and so your kisses came in pairs.
I see you now, and I find I can smile quite easily.
Your face has lost its fog, it's clear now.
And so I remember you fondly.
